1000 Dunes Rally: Sheikh Suhail in top spot for the UAE-based Rally

The final round of the UAE Rally Championship, the 1000 Dunes Rally, got underway today with official scrutineering taking place at the Dubai Autodrome. The prologue stage will be held in Dubai from 3pm onwards tomorrow, while on Friday cars will be driven onto the parc-ferme on Al Muraqqabat Street, Dubai, or Uptown Mirdiff (subject to confirmation) in preparation for the start of Leg 1 of the main rally at 2pm. Leg 1 will end at the Scouts Camp in Sharjah with the first car expected at approximately 5.42pm.

Leg 2 will take off at 9am on Saturday from Scouts Camp in Sharjah and end at Al Muraqqabat Street, Dubai, or Uptown Mirdiff, again subject to confirmation, with the first car expected to arrive at around 4.30pm. The 4x4 category is rather interestingly poised with leaders David Mabbs/Bryan Lightford (14 points) opting out and giving the combine of Sheikh Suhail Bin Khalifa/Wael Marjan (11 points) a realistic chance of lifting the championship.

Last year’s 1000 Dunes Rally winner Ahmed Bin Sougat/Jassim Al Balooshi, placed fourth with eight points going into this year’s rally, will have to push hard for a victory if they want a podium finish because the duo of Hamad Bin Eid/Nooh Bu Humaid with 10 points are also looking to book the top spot. Ali Matar, placed third last year and fourth going into this year’s rally, is also expected to make a late push for a podium finish. Interestingly, four drivers - Bin Sougat, Ali Matar, Abdulla Al Heraiz and Sadiq Fazal - are holding joint fourth position at the moment and all are expected to jostle with each other for a podium finish.
