|10th Albania Rally TICKER: "Half Rest Day" on Thursday with 52 kms in SS04.|
As reported, the most participants could enjoy the lovely beach-camp in the village of Orikum near Vlora on Wednesday evening after managing the longest stage of the 2014 rally with 490 kilometers overall - but not everyone.
"We arrived in the camp at 6:00 CET in the morning," a biker from the British "Desert Rose Racing" team reported. "We could handle the both timed sections. But the final liaison was so tough and dangerous, that we decided to sleep outside when the darkness came. But all is fine, we are back and will continue!"
The stage was very varying, typically for Albania. High mountains, fast gravel tracks, stony "Enduro"-parts, sand, mud, forests, villages. "It was really beautiful," the experienced German Toyota-driver Joerg Neese reported. "A great trip through the country, with very interesting and changing tracks and landscape. Sometimes very fast, sometimes very dangerous with less speed. We find a good pace but we learned to make the car smoother, our suspension is actually too hard for this ground. Some are driving like there is "no tomorrow" - but we like to repair less and enjoy more... The roadbooks are also perfect, the timing is working, until today its running well!"
Dutchman Peter Bos had a really hurting day. "I crashed in the second Stage, got some small injuries in my left arm and leg and a big cut in my right arm. We doctors stitched it and I decided to continue. Yesterday it was a lovely stage but i had so much pain... I could feel every stone. Need to find some painkillers, I ran out of it," he said with a smile.
But why is he continuing: "Well, I like this rally and I definetely want to finish. I was in the Top 10 before, now I lost too much time to fight for a good position. Just want to finish, equal how much it hurts." He´s a really strong biker!
The Bulgarian duo of Gochev / Hristov had a special experience on Wednesday. "In a liaison, in the middle of a village our rear wheel broke, was overtaking us and landed in a coffee-shop," Todor Hristov reported. "First the people were angry and discussing, after some minutes all tried to help us! But it didn´t work because there was no electricity in the village. So we had to go slowly to the next village and repaired it as best we can. But after some kilometers we found out that we had more damage than expected, called our service and finished the day on the trailer. In the camp, our nearest rival Martin Dechent helped us to repair the Polaris - very nice guy and great help!"
Today (Thursday) the day will be like a "half-restday" for the competitors. Late start at 12:00 CET mid-day (for the first bikes), 34 kms liaison, 21 kms timed section through the mountains across the South-Western coast of Albania. Today the stage is splitted - cars and bikes will drive different tracks in some parts. The weather is beautiful, blue sky, sun in shining, actually 25 degrees...the briefing just finished and the participants are ready!
