 | Dakar Rally 2013: De Rooy loses one hour after broken Turbo and more.
|
Gerard de Rooy lost his truck-lead in the Dakar rally. Due to an accumulation of misery he lost more than an hour. De Rooy finished 1 hour and 25 minutes behind Monday´s winner, Ales Loprais in his Tatra.
Already after 2 km. in the Special of 293 kilometres it went wrong. A sealer for the turbo broke. "And no one carried this thing with him, of course," said de Rooy, with a long face.
"Not Miki Biasion, not René Kuipers, not the other Dutch competitors. We´ve waited for 45 minutes for our service truck which had one. It will be difficult," tells de Rooy, quite affected, "but it´s not impossible, I´ll do my utmost" the Dutchmen said.
After the ring ws replaced and de Rooy could carry on, everything went wrong. "We started driving: steering arm bent; than a flat tyre; than the front window broke and last but not least we drove into a ravine. Jan Lammers pulled us out. I never again want to experience such a day."
De Rooy saw how his lead in the general rankings changed into an arrear of one hour. Nikolaev now is the new leader. De Rooy takes the 4th place, having another Kamaz (Mardeev) and Tatra (Kolomy) in front of him.
René Kuipers finished 15th. He left 9th but los 2 minutes by stopping for his team-mate de Rooy. “When we left again, 5 trucks had passed already and I got stuck behind a Tatra with a lot of dust. That´s a pity because I liked the stage. We had to take risks to keep up an even had to stop because the brakes were too warm."
