ABSA 2007: New Satellite Tracking System gets thumbs up.

Absa Vehicle and Asset Finance, principal sponsor of the Absa Off Road Championship, has welcomed the introduction of a satellite tracking system that promotes peace of mind racing in the series. The new satellite tracking system was in operation for the first time at the opening round of this year’s championship, the Nissan Dealer 400 in the Western Cape, and was given the thumbs up by competitors and officials. The system allows race officials to closely monitor competitors throughout the event, and will play a major role in promoting safety in the championship.

Absa Marketing Head, William James said Absa was proud to see off road racing leading the way in South Africa in utilizing the latest technology to ensure the safety of competitors. The system us much the same as a satellite tracking device we have in our vehicles.

"Off road racing is dangerous, and the safety of competitors is paramount," said James. "The Motorsport SA Off Road Car Racing Commission and the Absa Off Road Championship Partners are to be congratulated for the leading role they have played in introducing the new tracking system. We are happy to be associated with a championship that is proactive, and are looking forward to another season of highly competitive racing where the safety of competitors is being given the attention it deserves."

MSA Off Road Car racing Commission presidents Piet Swanepoel said they were delighted with the results of the first taste of the system. The former SA rally and off road champion has been a prime mover in the introduction of the system which has financial support from Motorite.

"With the late arrival of equipment from Europe it was a rush to get the entire system up and running for the Western Cape race," Swanepoel said. "But the early results showed the technology from Beacon Wireless, a French based company, will deliver the sort of results for which we are looking. We knew the position and status of every vehicle fitted with the device throughout the event, and from a safety and race control point of view the system is going to be worth its weight in gold. It also means that off road racing in SA is at the cutting edge of technology."

Swanepoel added that Beacon Wireless officials at the Cebitt Trade Fair in Hanover, in Germany, were able to access the event. The Cebitt Trade Fair is one of the biggest of its kind in the world. Motorite managing director Justen Cooper said the positive feedback from competitors and officials was gratifying. It was also pleasing to hear that competitors are more than willing to pay for various items of equipment, and are prepared to ‘sponsor’ their own safety.

"Motorite is happy to be playing a role in promoting safety on off road events," Cooper said. "While the positive feedback was gratifying, equally important was the fact that competitors were willing to invest in their own safety."

Swanepoel added that off road enthusiasts could in future follow events via the system, and can access all races at www.viewfleet.net. The login code is ‘Motorsport’ and the password ‘gptech’.
