ABSA 2009: All Systems go for Highveld 400 at Carnival City.

With the route all but done and dusted it is all systems go for the Highveld 400, round six of the Absa Off Road Championship, at Carnival City on August 28 and 29. Race director Adri Roets and his team are putting the final touches to the route, and all other aspects of race organisation have also moved into their final stages. The Highveld 400 replaces the Limpopo 400 on this year’s Absa calendar.

"We are busy putting the final touches to a route that will be interesting and challenging," said Roets. "We have not tried to reinvent the wheel and the route has been drawn from previous Carnival City 400 events. We chose one of the routes from previous events as our ‘role model’ and then incorporated into that bits and pieces from other Carnival City 400 races. The end result is a route that is going to be tough and good results won’t come easily."

Roets added hat the big difference between the Highveld 400 and previous Carnival City 400 races was likely to be the weather. Carnival City races earned a reputation as something of a rainmaker with the route turned into a quagmire on occasions. "You can’t manipulate the weather," said Roets, “but unless we have unseasonal rain it is going to be dry and dusty."

Roets added the route would also be spectator friendly. Easy access to spectator points has become a trademark of Absa Off Road Championship events, and the Highveld 400 will be no different. "All the spectator points are within easy access of race headquarters at Carnival City," Roets said. "The start/finish and the designated service point will also be at race headquarters."

The Highveld 400 will also incorporate a round of the Northern Regions Off Road Car Racing Championship and a round of the North West Challenge. It is expected the event will follow in the footsteps of the recent Sun City 400, and will attract an entry of more than 100 competitors in the Production and Special Vehicle categories.
