ABSA 2010: A Touch of local colour at opening round Adenco 400 Rally

There will be a touch of local colour when Derek du Toit and Adré Rheeder team up at the Adenco 400 Rally, opening round of the South African Absa Off Road Championship 2010, in Darling on March 19 and 20. Cape Town-based du Toit is the reigning Class B drivers champion and will link up with Rheeder for the first time in the Orange Tree BAT. Rheeder is general manager of the Ormonde vineyards in the Darling area and was talked into co-driving for du Toit by local businessman Theo Basson.

Basson plays a leading role in organising the Adenco 400 and via the Ormonde and Alexanderfontein Cellar will provide the Orange Tree BAT with additional branding. It was Basson who suggested du Toit link up with Rheeder.

Although he has no previous off road experience, Basson is no stranger to the racing culture. He raced off shore powerboats and was organiser of the Trans Agulhas boat race in 1994 and 1995.

"Adré is very excited over the opportunity to go off road racing," said du Toit. "We will be promoting the Darling wine experience, and with Theo a leading light when it comes to organising the event there is a bit of pressure. Adré and I must deliver on race day but we are looking forward to the challenge."

With late entries still to be accommodated the organisers, the Cape Peninsula Motorcycle and Car Club, are hoping for an entry in excess of 55 cars. "We already have 46 vehicles in the Special and Production Car categories," said Bill Bright. "By the time we close late entries during the week we are confident of attracting around 55 vehicles. The organisation process has gone smoothly. Co-operation from the local community has again been fantastic, and we are looking forward to another successful event."

Race headquarters, the start/finish and the designated service park will all be at the Darling Club. The Donaldson Prologue to determine race grid positions will start at 13h30 on Friday, March 19 and the race at 08h00 on Saturday, March 20. There are a number spectator points all within easy access from the Darling Club. Entry to the start/finish and spectator points is free.
