 | ABSA 2012: Changes made to tough ABSA 5th round Sun City 400 Rally route.
|
Competitors can start gearing up for a tough Sun City 400, round five of the ABSA Off Road Championship, in the Pilanesberg on July 27 and 28 in South Africa.
Changes have been made to the route to make it more spectator friendly - but the alterations have added to the challenges crews will face on what is traditionally one of the toughest events on the Absa calendar. After little rain in late summer and a harsh winter the veld is also very dry and dust is going to be a major problem for competitors.
The race heralds in the second half of the Absa championship and is an important one for crews with title aspirations in both the Production and Special Vehicle categories. There is a tight race at the front of the Special Vehicle category, while in the Production Vehicle category rival teams will be out to clip the wings of runaway leaders Duncan Vos and Rob Howie in the Team Castrol Toyota Hilux.
The event is again being organised by the Off Road South Africa with race director Adri Roets at the helm of the organising committee. Final touches are being put to the route with the race run over two loops of 170 kilometres.
"With a good combination of technical and faster sections it is not going to be an easy event," said Roets. "Changes to the route provide for some extra challenges for competitors and conditions are going to be tough.
"Once again we have had terrific co-operation from the local authorities and the local communities, and it is going to be an enjoyable weekend with some top class racing."
The route traverses the land of the Bakubung (place of the hippo) and passes through Mahopi’s Kraal, Witrandjie, Makgope and skirts the fringes of Mabeskraal. The course also takes in Tweelaagte and Bapong on the way back to Mahopi’s Kraal.
Race headquarters, the start/finish and the designated service park will again be located in the parking area just off the main entrance gate to the Sun City complex. Public entrance to these areas and spectator points along a spectator friendly route is free of charge.
The Donaldson Prologue to determine race start positions will start at 12:30 on July 27 and the race at 8:30 on July 28.
