Africa Eco Race: Details about the 2010 route by René Metge.

The Sporting Directory of the Africa Eco Race, René Metge, has unveiled the major lines of the 2010 route. "As a whole, the route will be well-balanced in terms of the difficulties encountered and the daily distance to cover" said the French. "Some legs will be more difficult than others, but we have tried to spread out the obstacles in a coherent manner."

"We have reduced the kilometres before the start of each timed sector as much as possible, because with long liaison sectors before the timed stages, the competitors have to leave the bivouac very early, sometimes in the dark. Morocco will see the longest timed stages. We will make the best use possible of the diversity of terrains available, without forgetting the south of the country, which provides some fine opportunities."

Once again there will be no marathon stages on this year’s programme. "According to our philosophy, this is not a vital ingredient for us, and we would like to see as many competitors as possible reach the finish line" told Metge. "Navigation will be a fundamental element. Those who think they ‘know’ the area may be surprised, even in Morocco. It will be a factor that cannot be ignored in order to have a successful race. During the route through Mauritania, the emphasis will be on discovery, with some brand-new stages."

"The pre-reconnaissance trips allowed the major lines of the route to be drawn up. The final reconnaissance sessions were slightly delayed due to the heavy rain which fell on Mauritania in recent weeks. We need to wait until some sections dry out. In all events, we need to wait for the second fortnight of September to finalise the road book. In the next few weeks, the stages and their distance will be unveiled."
