|Africa Eco Race: Schlesser or Loomans?.|
After seven stages in the Africa Eco Race it looks comfortable for Jean Louis Schlesser, who has more than 1 hour lead over his biggest opponent Jacky Loomans. Yesterday he battled with Sabatier in the red buggy, who almost overtook Schlesser in the dunes. Unfortunately for Sabatier he was distracted by reaching his opponent and crashed into the camelgrass where he was stuck for 3 hours.
Jacky Loomans and Frits Driesmans stay behind Jean Louis Schlesser and don't take risks. This means sometimes they loose time, but they have a strong second place in the Africa Eco Race this year. Their Overdrive Hilux performes very well. 'The car feels very strong now. Today or tomorrow is our chance, in the end even Schlesser makes little mistakes and if that happens we will be ready', says the team.
Behind the fastest teams are several inspiring buggys built for desert racing. One of them is the red-white-blue buggy of Rudy Goeminne and Erwin Imschoot. 'We are both drivers,' they said at the beginning of the Africa Eco Race, 'We are curious to find out if we can work together in the car but with a rebuild buggy, strong engine and good suspension we expect to be able to keep up. But our car has been driven straight from the workshop onto the trailer, it is really a first race with a new car.' So far the team has a hard time with small mechanical problems, but overall the car performs very good. Rudy and Erwin don't reach a high score in the overall ranking but the fun factor of racing in Africa is there.
The next three days the Africa Eco Race will move through Mauritania, several beautifull mountain passes and the endless dunes of the Sahara. Here the teams will have to give what it takes to reach the finishline.
