|Africa Race 2014: Preparation in progress for the 6th edition of the rally.|
Since the entries were opened, requests for information have been numerous and registrations have already started to arrive. The organizers confirm growing interest from competitors who are motivated to find partners (by organizing fundraising activities for example) in order to participate in the sixth edition of the "Sonangol Africa Eco Race" which runs from the 29th December 2013 to the 11th January 2014.
This year, many competitors want to come back to try to get onto the top spot of the podium. Last year in the motorcycle category, Norbert Dubois lost all hope of entering his name into the record books of the Rally at the penultimate Mauritanian stage when he ran out of fuel on his KTM.
It was a difficult blow to take for the Parisian rider. That's why this year, he'll be back firing on all cylinders to try to keep the upper hand over his competitors and friends Martin Fontyn and Guillaume Martens, who were first and second respectively in 2013.
In the car category, the current FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup leader Jean-Louis Schlesser will be at the start in his incredible Buggy to defend his title. This may be for the last time, as he suggested when arriving at Lac Rose in January. He'll be up against many teams with top drivers who have already announced their interest in the event.
Third last year in the truck category, Elisabeth Jacinto has decided to come back again. The Portuguese driver will do everything possible to bring her MAN over the finish line first, even up against some well known opponents.
Other competitors, just as passionate about Africa and cross country rallies, will confirm their participation. For them, entering the Africa Eco Race gives them the possibility to experience a fabulous sporting and humanitarian adventure but also to share it with others by making charitable gifts whilst respecting the environment. Registration has only just opened. Watch this space to see who'll be the favorites for this year's African event...
Gentleman rider Chris Horwarth, who entered last year, is coming back in 2014 but not alone. The Austrian rider will be accompanied by a “Rally Queen". Until the 15th June, this operation called "Rally Queen" consists of selecting a female rider who doesn't belong to a factory team and is passionate about rallies who wants to ride in an African Rally such as the Africa Eco Race.
It's completely funded by the "Elite Racing Team". It's not just a publicity stunt. In order for the woman to reach mythical Lac Rose in Dakar, she'll have to follow a training program amongst other things and participate in other rallies to prepare for the start of the AER 2014 on December 29th.
Once on the rally, she'll be part of a team with assistance. So ladies, to have the chance of participating in this amazing adventure, submit your application to: firstname.lastname@example.org. For more information, go to the website [ ELITERACING.AT ].
The Africa Eco Race "RAID" is more than just a tour that allows participants to encounter exhilarating landscapes and to improve their driving techniques on the different kinds of tracks that Africa has to offer. They'll learn how to read a road book and how to navigate whilst benefiting from professional advice, logistics and the security of the organisation.
Having already taken part in the raid, Leendert Lekkerker has again confirmed his participation this year in the race. You'll see him at the start on the 29th December 2013 and especially on the 11th January 2014 on the podium at Lac Rose in Dakar with all of the other competitors, from the first to the last.
For each rally at about this time of year, René METGE sets about designing a route for the AER for his participants. This route includes unforgettable scenery and varied tracks, giving an emphasis on navigation and driving ability. This year, this fan of Africa should include different tracks with new routes that should take many by surprise.
As usual, he'll pay special attention to the camp locations which will be installed in the heart of the African countryside. On the program; 11 stages and a rest day in Dakhla with short liaisons and a maximum amount of Selective Section arrivals directly at the camps. René is writing a more precise road book for the assistance teams, who'll be in the shadows but also take part in the rally, that has a better and more effective use of the mileage.
There's nothing better than meeting people to promote an event. René Metge will present the sixth edition of the Africa Eco Race and answer any questions from potential participants and the media at the following press conferences:
