African Heritage: Novel approach for extra Cross Country Rallies.

The organisers of the Africa Heritage Cross Country in Limpopo Province from August 2 to 5 have come up with a novel approach when it comes to attracting additional entries for what is a round of the FIA Cross Country World Cup.

The event has been thrown open to any licensed driver who owns a 4x4. The "man in the street" concept has been introduced to bolster a disappointing overseas entry for the first world cup off road event to be run in South Africa.

"For various reasons, most of them out of our control, we are thin on the ground when it comes to international entries," said Africa Heritage Cross Country franchise holder Charmaine Fortune. "To combat the disappointing spectacle of three or four cars out on the route, we have taken the bold step of throwing open the event to owners of 4x4 vehicles.

"For obvious reasons the Touring Class entries will have to come from licensed 4 X 4 owners, but it is a golden opportunity for motorsport enthusiasts to get actively involved in a world cup event. The route will not be as rough as the traditional off road event, and the local competitors will complete only between 100 and 120 kilometres of the 250 to 400 kilometre route each day."

Ms Fortune added that entries would be limited to 30 with an entry fee of R1 500 per vehicle, which will include a one-event MSA license. The event will be based at the Ysterberg Resort about 30 kilometres from Polokwane, with documentation and scrutineering on August 2.

The event is being run in conjunction with the Ford Motorite 400, round four of the Absa Off Road Championship, on August 4 and 5.
