|Australasian Emotions: We arrive in Australia - and in a great Campside.|
Welcome to Australia, welcome to the Australasian Safari 2010. As in every rally we try to keep you informed about the sporting aspects - but as our German readers knows, in the German edition we also have a special category, which is called "Emotions". This means, we not only report about the sporting theme. If we have the time, we also try to share our emotions. We could not speak native English, so please excuse if the reports are not perfect...
We arrived in Perth, Western Australia. We hoped for sun and heat. We found: Cold and very stormy weather. Hey, this is Australia, here´s beginning spring now, so where are the hot temperatures? 'Coming' said the Taxi-driver, which brought us from the Aiport to the HQ (headquarter), 'coming'. He was right. With the daylight the wind was going, the sun arriving. 20-23 degrees in shadow, much more in the burning sun - and we are not in the Outback now, we are in Perth, a 2.5 Million City (adding the unofficial residents).
Today the technical scrutineering was the main theme of the day, so nothing special to report from the sporting aspects. But the region where the camp was settled is awesome. In one main touristic region of Perth, directly next to the wonderful beach, on a green like a 'golf-green', only some metres behind the dunes. You can watch the red sun going down from the camp, even if you stay under you car to fix something.
For European standards (because of too many green politicans) this would be a 'no go' - but here it´s different. The people have a special sense for nature, you can say, a 'special deal'. You don´t find waste, even no cigarette butts. This looks like a deal: You can make your camp wherever you want - if you have respect of nature. Great for the participants. And we Europeans should learn from this.
As in Africa, the sun is going down very fast. From romantic phases (warm wind, red sun, crushing waves, perfect for couples) to totally darkness, maybe in 20 minutes. So, couples who will join this moods have to hurry up...
Whatever. We now prepare for the last day of scrutineering on Friday - and also the prologue. But we need cigarettes. Buying cigarettes is not as easy as in Europe. So we walked some time along the beach, found many shops - but only a few, really a few of them stock cigarettes. Puh, after felt 2 kilometres the first cigarette "dealer". And the first shock: One package (!) costs here about 12 euros... In Germany good for 3 packages, in Dubai good for 10. Ok, this looks like we have to delimitate smoking, good for our health - and budget.
Back in the HQ we looked for the wonderful, tasty "Wraps", which are served here. We found. Ok, where´s the Coke? Instead of the Coke we found cool chilled beer in the refrigerator - what for a evening, and what for a start in the Rally. We will again meet tomorrow - prepare for a special adventure!
