 | Australia 2010: Outer Bounds Racing with three cars at Finke Desert Race.
|
Outer Bounds Racing is winding down from one of the teams most heartbreaking events to date. The team rolled in to Alice Springs with a very well prepared 3 car team for an all out assault on the 2010 Finke Desert Race.
After pre-running the course several times during the week Saturday saw the cars lined up for the all important prologue, the prologue course is an 8-kilometer all out sprint that determines the start order for the big race the following day.
After making some minor changes to the cars the team went out and set a blistering pace with Beau Robinson and Roy Lukies in the #85 BFGoodrich Tyres Jimco being the fastest with team mate and younger brother Travis Robinson and Paul Currie hot on their heels in second place in a brand new Jimco. Brian Robinson and Richie Hayes in the #84 Jimco were back a little bit further than they would have liked but as we would quickly learn it wouldn't matter all that much.
"Coming here and starting the weekend with a 1-2 in prologue is just awesome, I am stoked for the whole team, Murray and the boys have put
in so much hard work and hopefully this goes a little way to making it all worth while." Stated Beau. "Everything just seemed to work for us, we had great tyres on the car which I think was one of the key reasons as there is no point of having all this power if we cant get it to the ground.
"We had a good run in prologue and obviously I am very happy that we have put both our turbo Jimcos on the front row, Beau must of had a very clean run and hopefully we can keep the pace up and run at the front all the way to Finke." Said Travis
After prologue while preparing the cars for the following days race to Finke, the guys discovered that the gearbox in the #85 machine was broken and needed to be replaced. Luckily the #3 and #84 cars were in great condition and the focus was shifted to getting another gearbox in the #85 machine.
Come Sunday morning it was a picture perfect sight with the 3 immaculate black OBR cars on the grid. At 7:30 Beau Robinson took off and headed to Finke Travis was 1-minute back. The 2 cars were running flawless and the first checkpoint saw them split by a mere 1-second with a very handy 23 second lead on the rest of the field.
At approximately the 90km marker Beau would be struck with electrical issues that ended his fight. Travis Robinson continued through the checkpoints extending his lead by leaps and bounds. But as we have seen so many times before the nature of this racing is cruel and with a lead of over 4 and a half minutes gearbox issues would put Travis out of the race.
"I don’t think anyone was expecting that both our lead cars would go out like this, we really do put a huge amount of effort into the team and the cars are prepared to the highest standard but unfortunately luck was most definatly not on our side and some parts that we source out-of-house have let us down severely this weekend." Said a disappointed Beau Robinson
"Even though we didn't finish I am still kind of happy that we have at least proved that we can come here and run with guys like Dave and Shannon. Hopefully we can sort out these drivetrain issues that continually let us down and take the fight to the boys at Griffith in a few weeks." Said Travis
Meanwhile Brian Robinson and Richie Hayes were still going strong in the old faithful BFGoodrich Tyres V8 Jimco. They made it into finke in 9th place after getting held up behind some slower vehicles in the dust. The run home saw Brian having a much better run and bringing it back in a very impressive 5th place overall. Certainly helping to keep the teams heads up high.
"We had a very dusty drive down to Finke yesterday but the run home was good, Richie had a heap of fun in the car and to get home 5th is great. Although this weekend has not been the best it certainly is exciting to know that if the boys can just get some luck on their side they will be a force to reckon with." Said Brian.
"Dad and the whole team did a great job and I am just looking forward to next year" Said Beau "Alice Springs has the best hospitality out of anywhere we travel to so we must say thanks to everyone who helps us out when we are up there aswell as a huge congratulations to Dave and the whole Peter Kittle Team on their win."
