|Australia 2014: GHR Honda Team dominates Condo 450 Rally in the bikes|
The "Condo 750 Cross country Rally" in Australia was conducted again this past weekend in the Central NSW township of Condobolin. Originally started as a warm up event for the "Australasian Safari Rally" the Condo 750 is now a renowned event in its own right.
Motorbikes, Quads, Sidecars and 4WDs came from all corners of the country to do battle in perfect conditions. Recent rains kept the dust down and participants enjoyed the longest event ever put together. Over 750 km of timed to the second special tests and nearly 100 km in total had to be navigated by competitors.
Friday night had all competitors lined up in the main street for scrutineering, documentation and then the meet and greet with all the fans. The township turned out the hospitality with the band playing, posters being signed and all the crews now ready to go. The top 5 riders are seeded and then their names are drawn out of the hat to determine Saturday's start order. Rod Faggotter was first on the grid followed by Todd Smith, David Geeves and Jacob Smith.
Saturday had riders completing 450 km over 3 special tests. Jake Smith won the day by only a minute and a half over his brother Todd, followed by Yamaha rider Rod Faggotter a further 6 minutes back. The Smith brothers raced each other frantically for the entire day and were rarely out of each others sight.
Day two dawned with Jake now the man being hunted by brother Todd. 3 special tests again had the riders doing battle over 550 km. The final special of the day was 190 km long. Jake and Todd started this test within sight of each other. They raced almost the entire event doing battle hour after hour, and when they emerged Todd finished just in front of Jacob. Two days of racing and the boys crossed the line together.
Jacob Smith's comments: "I hit a cow in that final test and put my head in the front guard. It was close to being a bad one. Then I had a small navigation error 9km from the end and Todd passed me, it cost me some time but he still would have got me."
Todd Smith's comment: "I chased Jake all day and at times we would come onto a big straight and then leave it an identical distance apart. Simon did a great job with the bikes and they were evenly matched. I had a flat spin in the mud in the final test but otherwise a good run. A big thanks to Simon, Jake and Glenn for the support this weekend."
Glenn Hoffmann's comments: "The racing was intense between the two boys. They raced for 8 hours of special tests and nearly 750 km of timed-to-the-second action, and can only be split by minutes. When you factor in their 1-2 at Condo and Finke last year plus their 1-2 again this year, they have raced nearly 40 hours flat out and only be separated by a few minutes."
The third placed Yamaha of Shane was 41 minutes behind at the end of the race so it gives you an idea how hard these two are going. I felt for Jacob as it was the best race I have seen for someone to finish second. Jacob was near perfect and was beaten by big brother Todd, a credit to them both and the team for keeping it all together for so long. The reality is the bikes did nearly 20 hours of racing and they finished in sight of each other - a credit to the riders, the crew, Honda and all our great sponsors who play their part."
The next battle of the GHR Honda Brothers will be at Finke where they try to retain their 1-2 plates again.
