Baja 500: Mexican Hardcore desert-rally started - TICKER (update 013:13 CET).


Saturday morning at 6:10 regional time the 39. Tecate SCORE Baja 500 started in Ensenada/Mexico, 65 miles south of the U.S. border at San Diego.. A SCORE-record field will be part of this weekend's 39th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 500. With late entries accepted up until race morning, 510 official entries are in the field to date, including 286 Cars and Trucks and 224 Motorcycles and ATVs.

We try to let you be informed during the finish-line at Sunday. This page will be updated in unsteady order.

The "Vanilla Gorilla" #54 Jesse James with master co-dawg Turbo Tom Geviss finally got the monkey off his back finishing the Baja 500 at 25:15. Jesse drove the entire race, the last half with no brakes. Andy McMillin brought his tranny hurting Trophy Truck across the line at approx. 25:00

#83i VW Touareg 2 driven by Mark Miller and co-driver Ralph Pitchford crossed the FINISH line around 8PM. The TDI diesel powered rally car was able to endure the harsh terrain of the Baja 500. Miller and Pitchford were able to keep their pace in front of the Class 1 cars, and successfully finished in front of several Trophy Trucks.

The #83i VW Red Bull Touareg 2 had an elapsed time of 10:00:34 with an average speed of 42.380 MPH.

Mark Miller in the VW Race Touarag was 9th vehicle on the road at Santo Tomas. DirtNewz staff on the scene report that the Touarag was by far the fastest up the shortcut hill climb north of Santo Tomas. No Class 1s were close to him.

Wayne Matlock's team reporting they had an 11 minute lead over 1A at Erindera when rider Wes Miller went off a cliff and broke his lower leg. Miller straightened his leg out and rode 50 miles to Santo Tomas shifting with his left hand. Miller's efforts earned his team a second place finish and the tough guy award.

Pro ATV 3a was reported to have gone off a cliff near Erendira (Rm311). The Honda ATV team of Wayne Matlock and Chad Prull lost some time, especially since the rider broke one of their legs. Chase for Myers Racing helped the injured rider back on the Honda TRX450R, and 3a limping to next Honda Pit. No confirmation on which rider broke their leg yet, but the good news is they are okay and still in the race.

"Weatherman" is Bob Steinberger's nickname. He will be positioned on a mountain slightly south west of Mikes Sky ranch at about 9.500 feet elevation during the Baja 500. He is the relay of all official SCORE communications during the event. As vehicles clear checkpoints the news will pass this radio channel. All medical emergencies, rescue efforts, security incidents, racers in need of pit support and much more communications is handled on this channel making it the number one source of race information.

Incident 1 - At about 7:36AM Riviera visual 1 reported motorcycle 257x down 8.8 miles south of Ojos Negros. Rider was unconscious at first report. At 7:42AM Riviera visual 1 gave an update that rider was now conscious. By 8:20AM it was relayed by Weatherman Radio that the rider would be transported to Hospital del Mar.
