|Baja Drawsko: Premiere and double win for new FIA Chevrolet Proto in Poland.|
The "Drawsko Pomorskie" region in Poland is not only well known for one of the biggest Military-grounds in Europe, no, the small but lovely city is also hosting a big amount of rallies - so it is no overstatement to say: Drawsko Pomorskie, settled in the North-East of Poland near the city of Szczecin, is the "Center of North-European Rallyraid".
The area is hosting the FIA World Cup round "Baja Poland", the "Breslau Rally", the "MT-Rally / MT-Series" - and since last weekend for the first time the all-new "Baja Drawsko", which counts for the local Polish Cross Country Championship.
The rally saw three days of competing: A prologue on Friday, stages on Saturday and Sunday in Drawsko and the neighbour-village Kalisz Pomorski. How kind the organizers like their rally you could see in some "extras" like free buses for the spectators to reach the best (but officially closed) rallypoints.
Next to some well known competitors from the Dakar Rally like Lukasz Komornicki / Ernest Górecki, three Dakar-trucks (two Tatras, 1 MAN) and the former Breslau-winners Marcin Lukaszewski or Robert Kufel, the rally counts officially more than 70 crews including cars, trucks, bikes and quads in different classes.
The rally also saw a "World-Premiere": The two all-new Chevrolet S10 T1-prototypes of the Polish "G1 Racing Team", driven by rally-veterans Lukasz Komornicki / Ernest Górecki and Maciej Stanco / Artur Kolodziej - which should offer a "small sensation". The car was developed in only eight months and was constructed for the FIA-CEZ series and rallies like the Dakar, Silk Way or Africa Eco Race.
"I didn´t had time to carry out long-distance tests," said Lukasz Komornicki before the race. "However, we decided to test our cars on the range in Drawsko."
Navigator and G1-partner Maciej Stanco added: "As you know, it is very difficult to build a complete T1-rallycar in only few months. But after the first kilometers of test-driving we saw that the car could be stable. There are some imperfections but this rally allowed us to start, so we wanted to test here."
So why a "small sensation"? Well, the cars were better than the constructors thought - and won the Baja after three days 1-2 in the overall and T1-ranking.
On the first day the event was dominated by the new BMW prototype of the "Polish rally-celebrity"-duo Marcin Lukaszewski and his lovely navigator Magda Duhanik - but they had to retire early and the field was open for the two Chevrolets and the new Nissan Navara of Pawel Molgo / Janusz Jandrowicz.
Finally, this trio won the race overall and in T1. A great start for the two Chevrolets (and also the new Nissan-crew) - and you will hear about the interesting Chevrolets in the future, we promise.
In the T2 (production cars) class the race was won by Grzegorz Szwagrzyk / Jakub Moliter (Mitsubishi Pajero), Mariusz Andrych / Michal Trzcinski (Toyota Land Cruiser 120) and Lukasz Lechowicz / Lukasz Solecki (Nissan Navara).
In the FIA-TH class (Semi-Amateurs after minimal FIA regulations) the winners are Lukasz Skoczen / Grzegorz Sleczka (Mitsubishi Pajero), Aleksander Szandrowski / Rafal Pluciennik (Nissan Patrol) and Robert Lyzwa / Pawel Kolasinski (Range Rover).
In the amateurs/open-class the race was won by the teams Jacek Iskra / Lukasz Sedkowski (Nissan Patrol), Malgorzata Kosinska / Andrzej Derengowski (Nissan Patrol) and Marcin Kruszewicz / Ludwik Wikowicz (Bowler Wildcat).
In the trucks, the three Dakar-monsters Vratny / Miskolci / Kaplanek (Tatra T163), Baran / Grot (MAN TGA) and Szustkowski / Kazberuk / Skrobanek (Tatra T815) made the race.
