|Baja Slovakia: Cancellation - Sad and unexpected end of the Baja Slovakia.|
Bad news from Slovakia: It is with sadness that the organizers announce cancellation of the 8th Baja Slovakia. Read the official statement from Juraj Ulrich . President of the Organizing Committee of Baja Slovakia.
"For us, as organizers, it is incomprehensible, unexpected and sad even more considering the fact that allowance for this race was given already in February. But... Those who are familiar with history of Baja Slovakia know that similar situation occurred back in 2004. The gates of military area became closed for us until 2008 when we breach the disinterest and negative stand of Ministry of Defense.
And now history repeats. There is new government and new people in principle need to nullify all agreements of previous government. Without any reason or explanation, without willingness to meet at least, despite all settled appointments.
By this our country, our government and Ministry of Defense clearly showed that they are not going to support this sport by any means. Even worse it seems they are unreasonably trying to thwart all efforts of those who organize this rally for years.
We, as organizer of the race, express our excessive disgust over behavior of particular employee of Ministry of Defense who has caused this and over the way how he brought this race to its end just week before it should have started.
Ministry of Defense has probably forgotten that army is here for the people and is paid by the people of this country. Our race has had no demands just to organize an international motorsport event in existing sandy terrain in an area army has in possession.
A preparation for this kind of race lasts for months and none of us has expected this even in the worst dream. Especially when Ministry of Defense has been one of the partners of Baja Slovakia till now and has praised flawless cooperation in previous two runs.
After changing all competent employees and giving away almighty stamps, a new "rulers" are showing their power by cancelling and rebuilding of everything valid until today. It doesn’t matter they will harm someone, the only thing that counts is a well-paid job in government structures.
What happens next? This is hard to predict. Will there ever be another Baja in Slovakia? I don’t think so. After eight years of never-ending struggling, pleads and explanations I have given up. I have tried to bring a little of this attractive discipline to Slovakia as well as represent my country abroad. It may sound exaggeratedly but right now I’m sorry that my achievements are connected to acronym SK. Maybe I should have set some stadium on fire, just like collective sport fans do, to get more support and attention than I have now.
This government by the act of its representative has abolished a race of FIA Central European Zone Trophy, national championships of Slovakia, Czech Republic and Poland and next year’s European championship for quads and motorbikes. It has cancelled the race, which attracted competitors from seven European countries, just week before the start. The event which didn’t harm anybody is over."
