Baja Spain: Colin McRae make his debut in the X-raid BMW X3CC

Rally ace Colin McRae is one of the fastest on the planet. Just a few weeks after signing his contract and intensive test drives with the BMW X3 CC (Cross Country) in preparation for the 2008 Dakar Rally, the British newcomer to the X-raid team will be making his first competitive start this weekend for the German marathon team. The 38 year-old former rally world champion will be on the starting line alongside Swedish co-driver Tina Thörner for the three-day Baja España in the newly formed AlgoDyne Green Power Racing Team.

"That's how we imagined it would be. Colin and Tina were highly motivated and enthusiastic about it right from the first minute", enthuses X-raid team boss Sven Quandt. "They were able to try a few things out in the test drives in Morocco and now of course they're keen to put it all into practice in a marathon rally - especially as the routes in Spain are more like those that Colin knows from the rally world championships." The winner of 25 world championship races is delighted about the additional test mileage under competition conditions: "This event is ideal for us. It gives Tina and me an opportunity to optimise our partnership and sharpen our senses for the upcoming tasks together with the X-raid team. And really, for the true professional there's nothing better than sitting behind the wheel of a powerful rally car. The X-raid BMW is supremely agile and BMW's diesel engine is a true powerhouse. Who knows, we may even be able to annoy our competitors on one or two sections."

The Baja España comprises three 1-day stages and covers a total of 1,461 km, more than half of which (795 km) will be a time trial. The race will start from the Spanish capital, Madrid, finishing on Sunday in Zaragoza, some 320 km to the north-east. In addition to the AlgoDyne Green Power Racing Team of X-raid with Colin McRae and Tina Thörner, Dakar winner Mitsubishi will also be taking part in the Baja España with two cars.
