Baja Spain: Isidre Esteve looks forward to his sixth win.

Esteve won last year, and in 2006 he wants to win his sixth potential victory. Isidre Esteve is one of the world’s best Cross Country Rally riders, and is also a pro in races such as the Baja, where the riding technique is by far the most important element.

"The Baja is very special to me - he states - and after winning last year, I’m really motivated to win again. Besides, this year’s race has a new dimension to it and is a lot more interesting. It’s longer, with new roads, and it does not just drive through Aragón, since it crosses more regions in Spain after starting in Madrid. This leads the participants to face a new and more demanding race. I’m optimistic, and I’m confident about my possibilities, since I’m familiar with the characteristics of the race and I will ride the same bike as last year, the KTM 540 EXC, a bike I can trust and with which I can drive to the limit".

The Catalan rider is aware of the elements that make the Baja a different and attractive race for the spectators: "Something that may seem obvious, but in fact isn’t, is that the Baja offers a first-class competition to the fans, letting them see the best drivers from up close, and living the race right next to them. For the most part of the year, they can only see their favourite riders on television, participating thousands of kilometres away. The Baja is the perfect chance to witness the stars driving and to see the busy life in the service areas".

In addition the Baja is a race that leaves no room to tactics or planning. Riders and drivers alike must drive with the uttermost caution, but always to the limit of their possibilities. "This is a race without strategy - Esteve explains- with just three days of competition there is no time to set up a long-term plan like you do in Africa. The rider cannot keep anything to himself and must always drive to the limit. In the Baja we use a smaller and manageable motorcycle, much lighter too. This allows a more aggressive driving, that is why it is a lot more spectacular for the fans. This is possible, because the road book gives us precise information and the route is clearly marked. As opposed to Africa, in the Baja we can find up to four crossings in one kilometre, that is why it is so important to mark the land properly. I totally believe in the organizers, since they have a lot of experience in this matter".
