Baja Spain: Isidre Esteve’s opinion on the race.

Catalan star rider Isidre Esteve had a terrible accident four months ago at a Spanish Championship Rally which left him confined to wheelchair. But now, after months of hospital treatment, he is back to the place of his victories, Zaragoza (he won the Baja Espana for a still unbeatable six times) to help the Spanish televisions work. Now he gives his opinion on the bike race exclusively for

"It is the first year that I don’t compete in Baja Espana. Four months ago I had an accident and after that changed too many things... So it is the first time for me to see the race from outside. To be honest it’s not easy for me to watch the race now.

Baja Espana is a little Dakar in Spain, many of the big names are here, among cars Nani , McRae and Peterhansel, among the bikes Coma, Farrés and Pellicer. Coma is now riding a new prototype with big engine while Farrés and Pellicer have smaller bikes which is here an advantage, becasue the rally is rather technical, not so fast. So Coma has a really difficult task here. But, on the other hand, Coma is the only one among them who won here previously, for Farrés and Pellicer it is a new experience.

Tomorrow it won’t be easy for Coma if he would like to catch up with Pellicer, because he has more than three minutes gap which is nomally too much for 250 kilometres. I rather expect a big fight between Coma and Farrés. In the past, many rallies here were decided only in the last kilometres, so everything can happen."

In honour to his excellent results, the organisers of the Baja Espana decided to withdraw the start number 1 once and forever for the bikes.
