Baja Spain: Some statistics about the upcoming Baja.

Jean Louis Schlesser is the most victorious participant of the Baja in the car category, with four wins. As for constructors, Citroën is in the lead, with six victories (five consecutive wins), just like the Buggy Schlesser, with five back-to-back wins in the last few years, and Mitsubishi with five victories, the last two were in a row.

In the 22 years of the history of the Baja, only two Spanish drivers managed to win in the car category. José María Serviá in 1999 won with a Buggy Schlesser. In that year, there was a once-in-a-lifetime all-Spanish podium, with Miguel Prieto and Manuel Plaza in the bottom steps of the rostrum, and Nani Roma was the champ last year behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi.

Isidre Esteve is the rider with the highest number of wins in the motorcycle category with 5 triumphs, followed by fellow countryman Nani Roma with 4. Nani is the only one in the history of the Baja to win behind the wheel of a car and atop a motorcycle. The Austrian manufacturer KTM adds up to no less than 15 wins in the Baja - the last nine were achieved consecutively. In the two-wheel category, Spanish riders have touched the sky on 17 occasions.

The 1997 edition was the hardest race ever: 940 km of roads, on which the first two cars, Lartigue and Vatanen’s Citroëns, required 12h 30 min, whereas the third qualified was Jutta Kleinschmidt, she came in 2h 30 min. later. The difference among the top three had never been so significant. In motorcycles, it took Joan Roma thirteen and a half hours to cover the distance, followed by Escudero and the Italian Vigani, arriving just one hour after the winner.
