BITD 2006: Dates set for Nevada Rally Experience

The third annual Nevada Rally Experience, the only true Rally Raid style event held on American soil, will be held Sept. 15th, 16th and 17th, 2006. Promoted by Harden-Offroad and Best in the Desert, the NRE is an authentic Rally Raid event for large displacement dual sport motorcycles.

"Except for the fact the event is non-competitive (i.e; it is not a race), we’ve designed the Nevada Rally Experience to be as close to participating in an actual "Marathonrally" as there is this side of Dakar," states Scot Harden. The NRE re-traces the route of the only rally raid events ever held in the United States, the Nevada Rally (1993-95).

"Based on the tremendous press coverage and rider feedback we received from last year’s event, we’re taking the 2006 edition of the NRE to the next level", commented event co-promoter Casey Folks. "We’ve really tapped into the lust that’s been building in America for the Rally experience. The 2006 NRE will be opened up to accommodate more riders, the routes will be longer and we’ll cover some all new, very remote areas in eastern Nevada".

The 2006 NRE will bivouac in Caliente, NV. Entrants have the option of "moteling" it in town or camping under the desert stars in an authentic bivouac setting. According to Harden, "We’ve even designed the meals and bivouac experience to mirror the legendary Dakar Rally. The only major area where we break with the current Dakar format is that we’ve designed the route to accommodate 700cc and over twin cylinder Dual Sports like the KTM 950 Adventure and the BMW GS."

The Nevada Rally Experience is not a typical dual sport event. It combines the unique aspects of on and off-road riding while adding the element of the Rally Raid format. GPS and Roadbook navigation are the key elements in making the NRE an authentic Rally Raid experience. The course itself is designed to challenge but not overwhelm the rider. Most important of all, the Nevada Rally Experience is about the shared camaraderie that can only be experienced during an actual Rally.

"With the increased awareness and interest in Dakar, we wanted to let Americans get a little taste of what a true Rally Raid event is all about." This event is very authentic and has been used in the past as a training exercise for the Red Bull KTM U.S. Dakar team as well as other Dakar hopefuls. "The route is awesome. It’s a real test of one’s navigation and riding ability. This year we are considering the addition of several short "special tests" where we’ll record the rider’s time for comparison with the other entrants. The real challenge though is to navigate the route we’ve laid out using the roadbook and waypoints from the start to finish", said Harden.

A short classroom introduction to Rally navigation will be taught by Harden and is included as part of the event. The Nevada Rally Experience is limited to 100 riders. Entries will be sent out on June 1st. For more information about the NRE visit [ www.harden-offroad.com ] or [ www.bitd.com ].
