 | Breslau Rally: 500 kms "Hannibal Stage" and a camp lost in stormy weather.
|
The famous "Hannibal-Stage" about around 500 kilometers turned out to be a wet challenge for all Breslau members because of a lot of issues. Due to the issued permits the stage had to be cut in 11 smaller sections.
Some sections had to be cancelled and some participants needed the night to reach the new camp near the Czech border. The rescue crews were under full load the entire evening. In addition to that a severe thunderstorm passed the area with heavy rains.
As a result of that combination a large part of the camp logistics collapsed, tents could not be set up and dinner had to be served under the open sky in the rain - if possible at all. Participants’ tent were blown away or torn apart by the wind. Unfortunate: During the night two motorbikes and other camp equipment was stolen.
The organization had again chosen to establish the camp on a green field of grass. This proved fatal when the rain set in as almost immediately all passages turned to muddy water holes that looked more like a race stage than the camp. The participants were not happy about the situation as it clearly could have been forseen that any rain would cause this situation.
In the camp cars sank into waterholes up to the roof, even the "Offroad Extrem" 6x6 MAN KAT got stuck. Out of protest a French team erected their camp on the only tarmac way in the camp which result in a total chaos for about two hours until they could be coaxed to move their tents.
Unfortunately also the sanitary installations fall into the chaos category at the moment. Since the race began only a couple of Dixi-Toilets (rentable plastic toilet cubes) were available and in each camp quickly became unusable under tolerable conditions. Only 4 showers exist for men and women each.
All showers have been permanently cold since the start of the race. Here there is need for improvement in the next race. Lucky was who brought his own sanitary equipment or camping car. Fortunately on the way there were truck stops were showering was possible for a small fee.
"We know about the problem, this was not our main plan" said camp-manager Dennis Koch. "Next year we will change the system, install a new heater system and install new toilets, eventually also on a container."
The track on Thursday varied, for the first time also Cross Country cars participated which are allowed to bypass the worst mud holes. Due to the circumstances no press tent could be erected and our logistic was distributed over the entire camp so that we only can give an update about the race events again on Friday evening or Saturday.
On Friday there is a special stage in an open mining area before the rally convoy moves to Hohenmoelsen in Germany where another stage will be driven. There were no results available upon publication of this article. Please check [ www.rallye-breslau.com ] fort he officially published results.
