Caucasian Challenge: Success of 2008 paves way for a bigger 2009 event.

The Caucasian Challenge "The Last Great Adventure Race" is a legendary entry into the yearly motor sports calendar that travels through 11 countries embroiled in conflict and every possible type of terrain. 32 enthusiastic adventurers forming 15 teams set forth from Budapest, Hungary on an adventure of a lifetime. After 17 days and 7,800 kilometers (4,800 miles) the teams had trekked through Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Georgia. The rally culminated with a huge crowd of onlookers and press watching and cheering as the exhausted travelers crossed the finish line in Yerevan, Armenia.

This incredible journey brought the participants far off the beaten track as they explored seldom-seen parts of the world in this unique event where things don't always go as planned. Cars break down, maps become deceptive, and border guards deny entrance. The teams had the rare privilege of traveling to locales often untouched by tourists, such as Turkish Kurdistan or the war-torn Karabakh region.

The participants were driving everything from modern Toyota Land Cruisers to two decade old Soviet Moskvitches. Few vehicles made it through the rally unscathed, but there was nothing that couldn't be fixed. In the spirit of the challenge, the teams let nothing slow them down as these participants are pioneers in the truest sense of the word.

The Caucasian Challenge is a minimal-assistance motor rally. There are no support vehicles with mechanics, or doctors to help sort out problems. Participants must rely on their own endurance, ingenuity, and luck to find their way to the finish line. There is a rough route to follow, along with a goal for every day of the rally, but at the end of the day the teams are completely self-sufficient. Teams in the competition category must follow the official rally route and solve difficult geo-caching challenges every day to collect points.

The Caucasian Challenge 2009 will be taking place from August 28 till September 13, 2009. A few changes will be made to the route, which will favor tougher competition in more remote and mountainous areas of the Balkans and the Caucasus region. The success of the 2008 rally has stirred interest across the globe and 50 teams are expected to participate in the 2009 edition.
