Dakar 2007: For the second time mixed feelings for Team De Rooy.

"It was dangerous to life today, nothing but dust and than, suddenly, competitors standing still on the middle of the track. This can’t go on like this without problems", says Gerard de Rooy who finished second today behind fivefold winner Tchaguine. Father Jan finished 8th after a superb special but doesn’t know at that moment that he can forget the stand, being more than 6,5 hours behind his son.

The fact is that Jan de Rooy got a penalty of 5 hours and can forget the stand. He needed 40.38 minutes more than allowed for the first Special last Saturday, so the penalty was inevitable, although it’s still a nasty business that he heard about this penalty only today at the end of the stage. Apparently yesterday’s compensation was only a mere palliative.

Strictly speaking, the organisation doesn’t observe the regulations as time penalties have to be announced before the start of a leg but, knowing the organisation, there’s no point to appeal against this decision. "However, I don’t take it lying down", is Jan’s first reaction. He is quite upset: "If I’m not proved right I have to have a talk with Gerard to see how we will continue this rally; I don’t live in a fools paradise".

At checkpoint 1, after 113 kilometres, Tchaguine already shows that he’s still good. Although he started behind Gerard de Rooy he’s already 1.30 minutes ahead of him, while Hans Stacey is more than 3 minutes behind Gerard. After 193 kilometres the Russian is still on the lead, followed by Stacey and the 2nd MAN driver Philippe Jacquot and Jan & Gerard de Rooy.

Finally the Russian Tchaguine wins the Special and is 10.39 minutes ahead of Gerard and 11.35 minutes of Hans Stacey. Jacquot takes the 4th place at 12.42 minutes. Hans Bekx, who also got a time penalty of 5 hours, finished 7th at 30.02 minutes. Jan de Rooy needed 11 seconds more and took the 8th place. Arjan Brouwer showed that he’s still a good driver and finished 10th at 39.25 minutes. Marcel van Vliet had a good day too, he finished 11th, 40.54 minutes behind the leader. Hugo Duisters was 13th at 46.56 minutes.

In the overall standings Vladimir Tchaguine took the lead from Gerard de Rooy who is now 9.53 minutes behind the leader. "I’m very satisfied with this result. So now and than it was dangerous to life today, nothing but dust and than, suddenly, competitors standing still on the middle of the track. This can’t go on like this without problems. You can’t keep up with Tchaguine. He takes all risks, and goes through everything. That’s a mug’s game and not normal", tells Gerard de Rooy, who’s on again.

Hans Stacey is 3rd at 11.09 minutes, his team mate Jacquot 4th at 14.35 minutes. Marcel van Vliet takes the 6th place at 52.06 minutes. Jan de Rooy is 6.49.27 hours behind Tchaguine and can only think of stage victories or supporting his son for the stand.
