Dakar 2007: Marc Coma holds press conference in Dakar

The Repsol rider, recovered from the accident suffered on Friday, has met the media yesterday afternoon next to the parc fermé of the African race. "I’m fine, I have a light cervical bruise and the x-rays showed a light fissure in one of them but we will wait to get to Barcelona to make a thorough analysis to see how everything is going."

This is how Marc Coma started the press conference offered by the Repsol KTM this afternoon at the Hotel Le Meridien, in Dakar, together with Jordi Arcarons and Javier Inclán, Repsol Sponsorship Director. After retiring from the 2007 Lisbon Dakar Rally due to a crash yesterday, Coma was taken to the Du Cap Clinic in Dakar, where he remained in observation for 24 hours. After an trouble-free night, Coma left the clinic this morning joined by his team, friends and relatives.

As regards his crash, Coma has explained that he remembers, that he was "following the wrong route from km 35 of the special, and once I noticed it was already too late, I had gone much too far from the right line. I tried to continue off road, sidelong but I just didn't manage and crashed, loosing a bit of consciousness. I tried to get back on the bike, but I felt very dizzy and wasn’t able to stay on the machine. Then the helicopter came and evacuated me."

Asked about his state of mind, the Repsol riders declares that "this has been with no doubt a hard night for me, but, well, bit by bit you make up your mind and realize what has happened. I think that now we have to learn from our mistakes. We have to get up again – and it’s not going to be the first time-, and we’ll be stronger. We will grow and we will come back with full energy and the eagerness we have always had. This is something I can promise."

Last but not least, Coma wanted to say thank you to all the people who have supported him. "I want to thank the whole team for the great job they have done and I also want to thank Repsol for their support, the journalists that have been following me during the race for how well they have treated me, and obviously the fans who have supported me so much. I have received lots of signs of affection during these past 24 hours and I'm very thankful to everybody."
