Dakar 2008: Opel continues cooperation with Szalay Team

"We are looking into the future" said the Hungarian director of Opel. Opel Hungary is regretting that this year’s Dakar rally was cancelled at last. The Hungarian company, the GM Motorsport in the bond of the parent company, and the team led by Balázs Szalay did their very bests to make Opel to do better than ever on the rally said to be the most difficult on the world. The Antara RR was prepared to the start with the best GM race-engine and with many technical innovations, which was cancelled for the known reasons.

György Megyeri, the Hungarian director of Opel said: ‘We are looking into the future and not mourn over on the cancellation of this year’s Dakar. We will continue the cooperation with the team lead by Balázs Szalay and we expect that the Opel Antara RR will be very successful on many great international tournaments. We also believe that the French organizers of the Dakar, the A.S.O will try to compensate the participants of the cancelled rally with mid-year tournaments and there is some news that one of them is going to reach Hungary’.

The relationship of Opel and the Szalay Dakar Team was established more than five years ago. Balázs Szalay has set off with an Opel (last year with an Antara) four times already and he reached the finish successfully all four times - once, as the only Hungarian. Last year the quality of the cooperation has changed, as with the collaboration of the Hungarian Opel, the GM Motorsport joined the development of the car and made a great leap of progress with the Antara. Before the planned Dakar, Szalay participated in the Dubai World Cup and with his 7th position he confirmed, that the team is making a good job. This is the kind of work that should be continued by Opel and the Szalay Dakar Team.
