Dakar 2008: X-raid to Dakar with Colin McRae and AlgoDyne.

The X-raid team is entering the Rally Dakar 2008 powered by biodiesel and with a new workhorse in the shape of Colin McRae. As Green Power Racing, X-raid will be taking part in the ultimate marathon classic using biologically produced fuel for the first time, having entered into a partnership deal with the North American Company AlgoDyne for this purpose. The new partner is supplying the team with the necessary fuels and its logo will appear on the team’s BMW X3 CC (Cross Country) as well as on team clothing.

The 38-year-old Colin McRae joins extreme skiing world champion Guerlain Chicherit of France and reigning rally production car world champion Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar at X-raid. The Scot was World rally champion in 1995 and won a total of 25 World rally championship events, placing him fourth on the list of all-time greats.

Colin McRae has already made a name for himself in the Rally Dakar. In 2004 and 2005 he chalked up wins over four stages, together with his experienced co-driver Tina Thörner. He also has an overall win in this marathon sport in the Baja Portalegre. Even outside the cockpit, everything revolves around rallying for the charismatic Colin McRae. On the one hand he has developed a new rally car and, on the other, the world’s most successful rally computer game bears his name.

"We could not have recruited anyone better than Colin. He is in everyone’s dream team," says X-raid team boss Sven Quandt. "Thanks to his spectacular performance at the world X-Games for non-Olympic sports, he is very well-known even in North America, the home of our new partner AlgoDyne. He’s spent the past week familiarising himself with the X-raid BMW X3 CC during a four-day test drive in Morocco. Colin felt good from the off, he was fast and he looked enthusiastic."

Following the initial test drive, Colin McRae sums up: "The X-raid team and its BMW X3 CC are exactly the right choice. The squad is small but it’s good and focused on its work. I believe we can challenge the major factory teams. The car handles well for an offroader and actually reminds me of a world rally car. I was particularly impressed by the incredible torque of the BMW diesel engine. After a short period of adjustment, I really got to grips with the car. We can now concentrate on further optimising handling and tuning." Tina Thörner, his co-driver and Jutta Kleinschmidt’s co-driver from Dakar last year, adds, "It’s the first time a mixture of biologically produced diesel fuels has been used, and it worked well from the start. It’s great to be in at the launch of a project like this. Motor racing and the environment need not be mutually exclusive. Together with AlgoDyne and X-raid, Colin and I now hope to prove this in the world’s most demanding long-distance rally."

The main reasons for AlgoDyne entering into the new, several-year partnership were the powerful Diesel engines and the highly experienced X-raid team. "Working with a strong team and with modern diesel engines will help us to develop the fuels of the future, and to ensure optimum performance," says Prof. Hans-Jürgen Franke, director of AlgoDyne.

Listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, the company extracts biomass from algae, from which electricity, hydrogen, biogas, carbon, ethanol and biodiesel can be produced, and is working together with X-raid not only to raise its own profile, but also to prove the effectiveness of its biofuels. "By using biodiesel in an exciting and challenging sport like rallying, we hope to convince our customers within a measurable timeframe that it will perform just as well for them as petrol or conventional diesel."

The newly formed AlgoDyne Green Power Racing Team from X-raid will be showcased at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt (13-23 September 2007), along with its trio of drivers, Colin McRae, Guerlain Chicherit and Nasser Al-Attiyah. Apart from extensive test drives in September, AlgoDyne Green Power Racing will be in the starting line-up for the UAE Desert Challenge in the United Arab Emirates (27 October - 2 November 2007) in preparation for the Dakar Rally in January 2008.
