|Dakar Challenge: The "American Dream" continues with HDRA Reno 500.|
The second part of the Dakar Challenge "Made in USA" will take place in Reno on Saturday: On completion of the race, a car crew will have won its registration for the Dakar 2014. A little more than a month after the "SCORE Baja 500" at Ensenada in Mexico, the drivers taking part in the special USA Dakar Challenge will set off on 13th July on the "Eldorado HDRA Reno 500", in the deserts of Nevada.
It is indeed a very special Dakar Challenge, because it is the crew which records the best total time over both races that will win the famous trophy as well as registration for the Dakar.
The racing conditions are set to be hellish, because the thermometer is likely to display 45°C in the shade. The competitors have a maximum time limit of 18 hours to complete the 80-mile loops around the city of Reno, "the biggest little city in the world". Winding tracks dotted with volcanic rocks, dust and deep canyons are on the menu.
Since the Dakar Challenge rewards young talents rather than the power of their machines, a coefficient has been set up in order to allow vehicles less powerful than the enormous Trophy Trucks and their 900 horsepower to remain in the race for the title, making predicting the winner no easy task.
According to Roger Norman, promoter of the SCORE and HDRA championships, “The extreme racing conditions of Reno make this one of the most complicated events to handle for the men and their machines. It’s a real foretaste of what the Dakar will be like next January”.
The winners will be lining up in Rosario next January and will join the crews led by Thomas Rundle (South Africa) and Sebastian Guayasamin (Ecuador) who won the Challenge in the car category on the South African and Argentinean legs.
After Reno, the Dakar Challenge will continue:
- 20th-27th September I Australasian Safari
- 3rd-6th October I Desafío Inca
