|Dakar Rally 2013: Dutch Mitsubishi Riwald Team remains hungry for success.|
The Dutch "Riwald Dakar Team" can hardly wait until the Dakar Rally 2013 starts in Lima (Peru). After meticulous preparations Erik Wevers and Gert Huzink will finally have their first go in the radically improved HRX Fords, based on former works Mitsubishi Racing Lancer. A top 10 finish is the goal of the Dutch team.
Also without Bernhard Ten Brinke, finishing eighth in his first ever Dakar, due to sad family circumstances, the Riwald Dakar Team is ambitious as ever. Erik Wevers and Gert Huzink are determined to show how competitive the new HRX Ford is in the toughest rally in the world.
To comply with the new regulations the specially developed V6 engine was swapped for a standard V8 engine from Ford. Together with the V8 a new gearbox moved in and the drivetrain was further strengthened. The tank moved to the back, while the spare wheels were placed in the chassis under driver and navigator.
During the transformation the team and technical supervisor Wevers Sport Offroad were put back three months in time when the development car went up in flames during the Silk Way Rally. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the team and the external partners we managed to get the HRX Fords in top specs just in time for the Dakar.
The Riwald Dakar Team had to overcome more big disappointments. Not only Bernhard ten Brinke was forced to miss the rally, also Richard Huzink was forced to stay at home because of his illness. Anne Kies takes over the wheel of his Ginaf rally truck. Good news is the additional support of truck driver Marcel Schoo in his Tatra, who also will assist the team in case of emergencies.
Erik Wevers / Fabian Lurquin: "With the stage win by Bernhard during the Morocco Rally we have shown the potential of HRX Ford. It is now up to us to continue this progress during the Dakar. My personal goal is a top 8 finish, I won’t go for less."
Gert Huzink / Eugénie Decré: "It is still a major blow that my brother and Bernhard are not with us. But it motivates myself and the team to perform even better. Finishing is my goal, but I won’t run away from serious competition."
Choose Anne / Ed Wigman / Rob Buursen: "I would rather have stayed home, because that would have meant that Richard was driving the truck. In case Erik and Gert get in trouble we’ll be there to help. But I hope the cars will be fine. That means the team performs well and it gives Ed, Rob and myself the chance to have a clean race."
