 | Dakar Rally 2013: Now Official - Sainz and Al-Attiyah with "Qatar Red Bull".
|
Now it´s official: Qatar´s 2011 Dakar Rally champion Nasser Al-Attiyah and Spanish 2010 Dakar Rally champion Carlos Sainz will be back at the Dakar-Rally - together in the new "Qatar Red Bull Rally Team" (Rally Raid Media Group reported first). Both will drive in a, let us say "special designed" Buggy, built in California / USA.
In the co-pilot seat alongside each driver will be an expert navigator who has also tasted victory at the Dakar Rally. Keeping Nasser company in the desert will be Lucas Cruz, while Timo Gottschalk will be keeping his eyes on the road for Carlos.
In an interesting twist to the Qatar Red Bull Rally Team story, Lucas Cruz tasted Dakar Rally triumph alongside Carlos Sainz, while Timo Gottschalk secured victory with Al Attiyah. Now the co-drivers have swapped seats ahead of the 2013 edition of the rally, which will once again feature legs of 500-560 miles a day on the 5000-mile slog through the deserts of Peru, Argentina and Chile.
"I’m really happy to now be at the stage to officially launch our new Qatar Red Bull Rally Team. It’s a very exciting time for all of us as we now put our complete focus into getting our new buggy car ready for the 2013 Dakar Rally," commented Nasser Al-Attiyah, who is not only one of the best rally drivers on the planet but also a world-class clay pigeon shooter, claiming bronze at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Two-time World Rally Championship winner Carlos Sainz believes that the new team has potential to spring a surprise when the rally gets underway in Lima, Peru on 5 January 2013.
"There’s nothing quite like preparing a completely new car for a Dakar Rally. My first impression of this buggy is that it’s a very impressive machine. The whole team has great hopes for the 2013 Dakar Rally."
