Dakar Rally 2014: Dakar-veteran Strugo out of race, Chavigny still fighting.

Again, hundreds of kilometers for the Dessoude crews on this “thousand of surprises” route. On Monday's stage, Frédéric Chavigny and Guy Leneveu were quite fast and the Dessoude "Atacama" Prototype was finally able to walk the eponymous land.

"The leg was very long with a long liaison but it was worth to look. We drove mainly at high altitude and maybe I was a bit 'sleepy' on one part of the stage... just kidding," Chavigny reported. "The 37th position on the stage, it is not so bad. The last third of the route in the fesh was very pulling and we saw the cars equipped with a turbo-diesel engine coming back very fast. At this altitude, atmospheric petrol engines are not really to their advantage, it is sometimes a bit tight."

He added: "Monday's result is positive for today's stage. This will allow us not to leave too late to cross the dunes sector because the heat is back again. We crossed today, on the second part of the route, the Atacama tracks we already know."

"I hope tomorrow we will have a good stage in the sand. If we reach Iquique without any problem, we would have make a big step towards Valparaiso. Traditionally, every year, crews spend the night in the dunes in this area and I hope it will not be the case for us. The goal for today is to reach the Pacific Ocean to have a swim."

For their part, Jean-Pierre and Bruno Strugo Cattarelli did not suffer the same fate and have tonight to retire from the 36th edition of the Dakar. Since the rest day, a suspect engine sound haunted the team and it seems tonight that the fears expressed in Salta were true. 10 kilometers from the finish, the engine broke down depriving crew hope to complete the rally. The disappointment is great, especially as "Jipé" was last night 35th overall.

"Man are okay but the machine is out...and the machine sold engine exploded...so it is a retirement," said Dakar-veteran Strugo. "This return to the Dakar aimed whether I was still able physically and mentally to endure such an event. To this question, the answer is positive. But would I have the courage to start?"

Staying with Jean-Pierre Strugo during the stage, Yves Tartarin did not attempt to shine on Monday, but was focused on the fate of his crew. Pickup 03 is still in the race, 51st overall before tackling the dunes of the Atacama.
