Dakar Rally 2014: Only 80 of 146 cars in the race - also Dessoude involved.

On a breakneck pace during three leg in a real furnace, with track temperatures around 50 ° C, 2014 edition of the Dakar is a true showpiece and the list of retirements is growing daily.

If Friday the stage was beautiful and a little shorter, 400 km, it was not a walkover. Even if the heat did not decrease, the positive point of this stage between Tucuman and Salta... was to focus on the rest day of Saturday. Never a rest day will also properly named as men and machines are already very tired at halfway.

After two stages only, it is crazy to see the number of competitors who retired, regardless of the category. Victim of this breakneck pace, the Buggy Juke’s crew, Régis Delahaye and Jean Paul Forthomme, reached the bivouac at night but were out of the race for too big delay. Also in trouble on yesterday’s stage and arrived in the night at the bivouac in Tucuman, Frédéric Chavigny and Guy Leneveu returned to track today and finished at an excellent 38th position overall.

No moral failure either to Jean-Pierre Strugo who yesterday jumped overall (33rd) after a great stage and tonight is 32nd overall. Yves Tartarin is frankly income in the pace after his problems t the beginning of the race. With the 40th time to day, the crew and the Pickup are in the Top 50 overall.

This rest day was well deserved and teamchef André Dessoude took sthe opportunity to come back on the past week. "This year the race is particularly difficult and the general level is higher," Dessoude said. "The best evidence is to see the retirement of nearly half of the competitors after just six legs. Among these retirements, there are teams and drivers forefront who aimed for a Top 5. I think, for example, of Carlos Sousa and Guerlain Chicherit. It remains around 80 car for 146 entered and 87 bikes for 212 entered... No comment..."

"The route is demanding and difficulties are going crescendo over several days. Physically and mechanically, this pace has terrible consequences. An additional factor came a little more complicated the task, the heat. Damage to the crews are important and no one is safe from a heat stroke , as was saw yesterday with Jean-Pierre Strugo. Driver and Codriver are suffering but the mechanics too. Reach the rest day is already a partial victory. Competitors who will join Valparaiso, apart from any classification will have achieved a feat this year more than ever. This Dakar is tough, very tough."

"I feel sorry for Regis Delahaye and Jean-Paul Forthomme after their retirement but there was more hours spent on track than hours of rest and with this vicious cycle, after a while it no longer possible," Dessoude added.

"This is what happened that night. It's hard but that's racing. Fred has also lost a lot of time in Thursday's stage and many places overall, but Friday, he was great and did not forget that the goal is to reach Valparaiso. Jean Pierre Strugo enjoys his buggy and climbs day after day on classification. Yves Tartarin had problems on the early days but now, over the miles, he is in the game."
