Dakar Rally 2014: SMG´s Carlos Sainz stays on the pace as Dakar enters Chile.

Celebrations surrounding Carlos Sainz's win on stage 7 on Sunday were kept to a minimum as the team worked on a plan to maintain this momentum throughout the entire second week of the 2014 Dakar Rally. The Spaniard was back in the thick of the action on stage 8 as the race crossed over the Andes Mountains.

The job was not made any easier for Carlos and co-driver Timo Gottschalk as they found themselves opening the road on SS08. Being the first car onto the 302km timed route between Salta and Calama added extra pressure to the pair's navigation skills.

The SMG Rally Team duo dug in along the twisty narrow tracks in the foothills of the Andes Mountains and eventually only one car managed to get past. Later in the stage Carlos and Timo were then able to take advantage of the track widening. During this passage Carlos cranked up the speed and got the Buggy flying through the bumpier sections.

The final result for Sainz and Gottschalk was third place, 2:36 minutes behind stage winner Nasser Al-Attiyah in his X-raid Mini. The timings for the stage leave the Buggy in 6th place in the general rankings with the gap to race leader Nani Roma (X-raid Mini) cut but a further seven minutes to 01:43:59 hours.

"History proves that it's very difficult to win a stage at the Dakar when you open the road," Carlos Sainz reported after the stage. "This is the same for cars and bikes and every race there is at the Dakar. Therefore we can't be too´disappointed to finish third on the stage today. The benefit of coming third is that we will have a good starting position for tomorrow's stage that will help us to keep on pushing."

His German navigator Timo Gottschalk said: "The terrain of this race tends to change completely when we cross from Argentina to Chile but Monday's stage was similar to the technical stages we had in the first week. We were racing along plenty of twisty narrow tracks with a few riverbeds here and there to further complicate things. Our best moments came when the track widened and things became a bit bumpier. We opened the road so that always adds extra pressure to get the navigation right but I felt we dealt with this well and brought home a good result."

Carlos and Timo's team-mates Ronan Chabot and Gilles Pillot were also moving up on SS08 as they brought their SMG Buggy into Chile. Ronan and Gilles took 39th place on the route from Salta to Calama to move into 24th place in the overall classifications.

"It's been a good day for us because everyone knows that it's not an advantage to open the road," SMG team manager Philippe Gache commented the day. "Carlos only lost about 2m 30s on the stage winner and that was what I had in mind as a good result. Of course Carlos is the type of guy that wants to win everyday and we are doing everything we can to help him do that. When we work on the car tonight we will be looking for the settings that will allow Carlos to chase down another stage win on Stage Nine."
