Dakar Rally 2014: Success for Carlos Sainz and Timo Gottschalk SS07 Sunday.

Rally racing legend Carlos Sainz put on a driving masterclass to score another stage win in his Buggy. Carlos and co-driver Timo Gottschalk went hard from the first corner until the last to bring home the team’s second stage win of the 2014 Dakar Rally on SS07 on Sunday.

Sainz took advantage of a wide track to push his Buggy into each corner and found flat out speed the best tactic along the straights. Faultless driving throughout the day concluded with the Spaniard collecting the 27th stage win of his Dakar career.

The victorious result on SS07 has reduced the gap between Carlos Sainz and race leader Nani Roma (X-raid Mini) by nine minutes. With his Buggy separated from top spot by nearly two hours the team remain focused on maintaining the devastating pace shown by Sainz on Sunday.

"The stage was a mixture of very fast passages and also some extremely technical, twisty driving," said Sainz after the stage. "It was not the ideal conditions for our Buggy so it surprised me that we came out with the win on Sunday. It just shows you what this team is capable of when everything comes together. One thing for sure is that we pushed hard into every corner today and we will keep giving it everything we have until the end."

His German navigator added: "The amount of rain that fell last night had me worried that Sunday’s stage could be a disaster for us. We thought there would be so much mud and water on the stage that maybe the day’s racing would even be cancelled. Eventually the stage was started and as soon as we crossed the first mountain the conditions completely changed. The sky was clear, the track was in good shape and the landscape was stunning. Carlos did a good job to find a nice rhythm very early on the stage and we were able to push all the way."

Also going on the attack in the second week of the Dakar is the SMG Buggy of Ronan Chabot and Gilles Pillot. The experienced Frenchmen are hunting down their fifth top 20 finish at the Dakar. A 26th place finish on Stage Seven puts Ronan Chabot and Gilles Pillot in 26th spot on the general rankings.

After celebrating the team’s second stage win with some fresh crêpes cooked up by onsite chef Bruno the attention switched to another hard day of racing to come on Stage Eight. The route into Chile takes the Buggies over the Andes Cordillera and challenges the drivers over some of the fastest tracks of the entire rally.

"We won a stage last week but doing it for a second time really means something," stated Philippe Gache, SMG Team Manager. "It shows that the potential in this Buggy is real and that is very satisfying to demonstrate. To win two stages before arriving in the Atacama Desert is a fantastic result for the team. I was really not expecting these results to come before arriving to the dunes. Seeing Carlos pushing like this makes me think the last six stages of this Dakar will be really interesting."
