|Dakar Rally 2015: Return of Peugeot or Citroen team for Dakar 2015?.|
As the French newspaper [ L´EQUIPE ] reported, there are maybe plans of the French car-manufacturer Peugeot to start a "comeback" in the Dakar Rally for 2015 - exactly 25 years since its last factory participation in 1990. Peugeot has won the event four times consecutively between 1987 and 1990, first with the 205 T16 and then with the 405 T16, three times with Ari Vatanen and once with Juha Kankkunen.
But the rumours are not only about Peugeot - insiders are talking also about the Citroen brand. Both companies are involved in the PSA group, Citroen also has a big experience in the Dakar Rally.
"We have to think about the future," Peugeot Sport team principal Bruno Famin said. "We have a lot of ideas, not only with the ´208 T16 Pikes Peak´. We have to see what's best to do in terms of communication, return on investment and what's really interesting. We have to think about that and prepare our plan for 2014 based on the level of budget we have, which is not yet fixed."
Three names have been connected for such a project: Dakar-winner Stephane Peterhansel, Sebastien Loeb and Nasser Al Attiyah. Whilst Peterhansel just signed a contract with X-raid also for 2015, Al Attiyah would be open for the project. "It would be great to drive for this team" the Qatari said our partners of [ RALLYMANIACS.NL ]. "Peugeot is a brand with a big Dakar history and it´s always good to have new factory teams in the Rally." Sebastien Loeb has always stated that he would be interested to race in the Dakar.
Insiders are speaking about two possible ideas: A two-wheel-drive buggy maybe based on the Peugeot 208 - or a 4x4 prototype. Red Bull is expected to provide additional backing, following a meeting between the company’s marketing bosses.
