 | Descision ready: Volkswagen Team to start again in South America in 2011.

Volkswagen will contest the "South-America-Dakar" Rally again in January 2011. After the outstanding one-two-three win in January this year, the Volkswagen management board decided to continue the successful commitment. This means that the Wolfsburg based automobile manufacturer is grabbing the opportunity to clinch a hat-trick at the rally.
Before the cancellation in 2008 the "Dakar" was the toughest Rally in the Marathonrally-Motorsport. Since the movement to South Africa the rally becomes more like WRC-style, a gigantic marketing-instrument and "easier-to-handle" rally with big show for spectators and press. The brand as "Toughest Rally" is now with the "Africa Eco Race" and "Heroes Legend".
The marketing-factor is also the main reason for Volkswagen to continue: "South America is an important growth market for Volkswagen and thus the ideal venue to continue expanding the awareness and popularity enjoyed by the Volkswagen brand" says Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Management Board of the Volkswagen Brand for the Development Division. In February Hackenberg told, that Africa is not interesting anymore for the Company.
"We now have the opportunity to achieve the diesel hat-trick and to thereby make motorsport history again," enthuses Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "We will again invest all our passion, heart and soul in this project at the next Rally."
