|Donaldson CC: A family affair in South African Uno Freight Ford Team|
They believe in keeping it in the family in the Uni Freight Ford team, and a second husband and wife combination will join the fray at the "Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race", round four of the South African "Donaldson Cross Country Championship", from June 21 to 23.
Cross country stalwart Kobus van Tonder has competed with son in law Freddie Kriel in recent seasons, but has decided to take a sabbatical. Kriel will now take over the driving duties and will be joined in the cockpit of the Uni Freight Ford Ranger by wife Suné who is van Tonder’s daughter.
A second Uni Freight Ford entry sees van Tonder’s son Jacques and second daughter Lizelle team up. Keeping an eye on matters will be Kobus van Tonder who will take over as team manager for the rest of the season.
“I have decided it is time to stand down for a while, so Freddie will take over the No 15 car with Suné his co-driver,” said van Tonder. “Suné is busy doing some intensive navigation training to be ready for the Botswana race. “We enjoy doing things as a family and a little friendly rivalry between Freddie and Suné and Jacques and Lizelle is sure to develop.”
Suné is a lawyer by profession and for the last four years has worked full time at the Uni Freight family transport business based in Harrismith. Husband Freddie is the workshop manager, and the Kriels will join Marius and Jolinda Fourie as husband and wife entries on what is the only marathon event on the Donaldson championship calendar.
Cross country racing is a family orientated sport and at the last round of the championship, the Toyota Dealer Sugarbelt 400 in KwaZulu-Natal, the entry list contained eight father/son combinations, five sets of brothers and one father daughter combination. There were also a number of cousins and brothers in law in the field and a similar scenario is expected at the Botswana event.
The Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race will again be based at Kumakwane on the outskirts of Gaborone. The Qualifying Race to determine race grid positions will start at 13:00 on Friday, June 21 and racing on the next two days will start at 08:30.
