|Donaldson CC: A second Cross Country Racing innings fro Cricket Legend|
Proteas cricket legend Jonty Rhodes will be back for his second innings of motor racing at the "Vryburg 400", round six of the South African "Donaldson Cross Country Championship", in North West Province on September 6 and 7.
Jonty will again act as the celebrity co-driver for former South African champion Archie Rutherford in the Imperial Automotive Nissan Navara that runs under the Regent Racing banner. The champion fielder became an overnight sensation with his diving run out of Pakistani batsman Inzamam-ul-Haq in the 1992 World Cup in Australia, and had his first taste of cross country racing with Rutherford on the Gold 400 at the end of last season.
“After failing to finish on his first attempt, Jonty has pestered us non-stop for another bite at the cherry,” said Regent Racing team principal Terence Marsh who himself is a former professional cricket player. “All our celebrity co-drivers have been converted into wonderful ambassadors for our sport and Archie has really enjoyed competing with them. For the majority of them to ask for a second helping shows just how addictive cross country racing can be.”
Jonty joins former Springbok rugby player Stefan Terblanche as the second celebrity co-driver to join the Regent Racing team for a second time. After competing on the 4x4 Mega World 400 last year Stefan then sat alongside Archie on this year’s Toyota Dealer Sugarbelt 400 in KwaZulu-Natal.
In a career lasting from 1992 to 2003 Jonty played in 52 Test matches and scored 2 532 runs at an average of 35.66 and took 39 catches. He also played in 245 one day internationals scoring 5 935 runs at an average of 34.5 and took 101 catches.
A specialist fielder in the point region Rhodes is believed to be the only international cricketer to win a Man of the Match award for fielding. It was, however, his run out of Inzamam that first turned him into a household name in the cricket world.
Race headquarters and the designated service point will be at the Vryburg Motor Club with free public entry to these areas and spectator points along the route. Qualifying on September 6 will start at 12:00 and the race at 08:30 on September 7.
