|Donaldson CC: Horn brothers desperate for a class-win on Nkomazi 400|
A pair of brothers will be desperate to win their class on the Nkomazi 400, round two of the South African "Donaldson Cross Country Championship" in Mpumalanga on April 12 and 13. The event is a new one on the calendar and is based in Malalane where Johan and Werner Horn grew up.
Both brothers work at Malalane Toyota, the family business, and will be looking for what would be a fairytale win for the pair in the Malalane Toyota Land Cruiser running in Class D of the Production Vehicle category.
The pair made a disappointing start to this season when they failed to see out the distance on the opening event, the RFS 400 in the Magaliesburg area, and a win on home soil would get their championship challenge back on track.
“A win in our own backyard would be great,” said driver Johan, the elder of the brothers. “There will be a lot of support for us out there but we are trying to treat it as just another race. A double incentive is to make up for the RFS disappointment and get ourselves back into the championship race.”
Last year the Horn brothers did not compete in all the events but still managed to finish third in the Class D championship. The pair has a class win on the Toyota 1000 Desert Race to their name and last season also won the Human Auto 400 in the Free State.
“We will go into this race with a lot of confidence,” said co-driver Werner. “A win would be the cherry on top of the cake but consistency wins championships, and we need to start picking up points. “Racing in front of our home crowd might put a little extra pressure on us, but it will be fun.”
The route for the Nkomazi 400 is spectacular and spectator friendly with race headquarters and the designated service park at the Riverview Preparatory School in Malalane. Public entrance to these areas and spectator points along the route will be free of charge with spectator guides available at race headquarters and at Malalane Toyota.
The prologue on Friday, April 12 to determine grid positions will start at 12:30 and the race the following day at 08:30.
