Dos Sertoes Rally: Cyril Despres wins the Rally in Brazil.

French KTM factory rider Cyril Despres won the fifth stage of the Rallye World Cup at the Sertoes Rallye in Brazil. In front of french David Castou, Despres managed to hold back the attacks of the motivated and strong riding Brazilian pilots, just recovered from his recent arm injury. Third place overall went to last Dakars stage winner and Sertoes Rallye title defender, Jean Azevedo/Brazil, also on KTM. In the 450 cc category, the victory was taken by Brazilian Jose Helio on Suzuki, in front of Chilenean Francisco Lopez on Honda. Castou and Lopez could increase their leadership in the world championship standings due to their second positions in Brazil.

The 2005 World Champion in the 450 class, Carlo Degavardo, had to bury his hopes of victory early in the race. He lost ground in river passings twice during the second day and quit the race after some hours of delay due to the water repairs. The leader until day three, strong Brazilian Tiago Fantozzi, was forced to retire due to a broken collar bone suffering at a crash at the end of the marathon special of the gruelling 10-days competition.

How competitive the brazilian riders are in between was shown also in the various special tests winners: Beside Despres, four different brazilian riders won at least won stage of the ten days contest. 3.878 tough kilometers through brazils wide and wild northeast prove that the well organized event found the right place in the rally worldcup calendar, as another very attractive event in latin america.

The competitors passed during the rally some of brazils most beautiful landscapes of the states of Goias, Maranhao, Piaui, Tocantins and Bahia with a brazilian-typical finish line party at the atlantic beaches of Porto Seguro. The roadbook offered very fast pists through deserted land, enduro style tracks, very technial, irregular and rocky sections in the mountain areas, and dense vegetation. A lot of sand, erosions, and deep river crossings made the event, for the second time stage of the Cross Country World Championship, complete.

Cyril Despres said: "I am very happy to win here in Brazil, after a really long and hard rally with wonderful landscapes reminding me a lot of the Dakar tracks. It is very special here because pilots, assistance, all the rallye is very much welcome at all places we passed, and the population is compared to other Rallies actually part of the event and everybody very exited and helpful. I am looking forward to come back next year!"
