Grand Erg Rally: Competitors arrive in Tunisia

The competitors of the "2. Grand Erg Marathonrally" arrived on Friday morning in La Goulette in Tunisia. Instead of the first run of the Grand Erg 2005 with seven teams, the 2006 edition of the new amateur-rally has 14 participating European teams.

On the first day in Tunisia the rally-convoy goes about 600 kilometres to Tataouine in the South of Tunisia, where the regular Rally starts with the first leg on Saturday, which will bring the competitors about 278 kilometres more southly to Tiaret near the Libyan border.

The 2006 edition of the 2. Grand Erg Rally is one of three German-Tunisian amateur-rallies, the shortest (only one week) and the first in the 2006 calendar - the both other German rallies (El Chott and Erg Oriental) will start in October and November. The rally is open for competitors around the world, but after missing to make more international promotion there are now only German and Swiss participants in the race.

As the expesivest German amateur-rally the "Grand Erg" wants to set high standards in the amateur-class. Long distances, the most and difficultest dune-tracks and race-conditions after FIA-Regulations (except the car-standards, competitors only need regular 4x4 car with navigation-equipment) makes it similar. On the other side the "Grand Erg" has only first-class hotels instead of outdoor-camps, a very good working organization and well food-coverage (better then FIA-Standard).

As the most amateur-rallies the "Grand Erg" is very interesting because of the different makes and types of cars - the range goes from a regular Suzuki Samurai up to a FIA T1 Mitsubishi Pajero. In 2005 some FIA-Dakar-teams started at the German "El Chott" amateur-rally - and were surprised, because the most amateur-cars were better then the "experts" - with normal 4x4 cars.

Marathonrally.com is reporting live directly from Tunisia in the next days, so please excuse, if the "normal news" are not as much supported as regulary. From tomorrow evening you´ll find daily news and standings from the rally and also some galleries with actual pictures from the desert.
