|Greece 24 Hours: 64 participants to start this weekend, 983 kms to race.|
Some are calling it the "European Baja 1000": The "24 hours of Greece", organized by the Greek Ihnilatis4x4. This week the organizers unveiled the stages of the 2013 edition - and it will be an very interesting race.
983 kilometers in 24 hours including liaisons, 906 kms to race in full speed - in one night, in the south of Europe, in the middle of Greece. Cars like a production Suzuki Jimny up to a high-end Dakar-prototype Mitsubishi... all are driving together, following easy and cheap-to-finance rules.
Well, for US- or Mexican Americans this might be not a very big number, but who is living in Europe or nearly Asia knows that normally it is nearly not possible to announce a race as big as the 24 hours of Greece. Villages, dozends of street-crossings etc are much more difficult than organizing a rally in a wide open desert. Yes, you read right: The rally is crossing the country of Greece, including warm valleys and snowy hills... sun and snow, spring, autumn and winter, all in 24 hours, all in the south of Europe.
Actually 64 competitors comfirmed their participation, including participants from Greece, Israel, Holland, Italy, Bulgaria, Sweden, Albania, Slovenia, Turkey and Cyprus. The rally is open for bikes, quads, SSV and cars, amateur, FIM and FIA - and the race will include 12 bikes, four quads and SSV and 48 cars.
"We are happy to welcome so many competitors this year," organizer Giannis Athanasiou told marathonrally.com. "We also have big names like Edvin Kasimati (organizer of the "Albania Rally"), Vasilis Boudros (winner of the Hellas Rally), Christian Pastori from Italy, David Peterson from Sweden, Edward Jerak from Slovenia, Raz Heyman from Israel (Mitsubishi Proto), Todor Hristov, Zornitsa Todorova and the "Breslau Rally" third Slavchev/Staynova (Mercede G500 Proto) from Bulgaria, Vincenzo Cangi (Isuzu D-Max) from Italy or Erno Lieshout (Toyota Land Cruiser 200 T2) from Holland, to talk about some big names. I hope they will enjoy and like the race!"
