|Greece 24 Hours TICKER: Rain destroyed part of stage - 20 kms shortcut.|
At 23:01 CET (00:01 local time) the fastest car in the SS02 (round course Distomo-Distomo 393 kms), the Bulgarian crew Slavchev / Staynova (Mercedes G500) reported, that due to the still heavy rain a part of the road in the mountains is broken and there are big stones in the stage.
The organization found a deviation route via the tracking system and gave the competitors the order, to take a shortcut about 20 kilometers. Only some minutes later they sent an organization-car to mark the position where the competitors have to leaver the former track.
Due to security reasons, the bikes are not running in the night. They will restart with the SS03.
"Our tracking system is working very well," race director (bikes) Meletis Stamatis reported. "We are the first Greek rally which includes the tracking system without any extra fees," he said. All participants were controlled online in real-time, even without any problems because of the extremely bad weather.
Why are you not driving in summer and daylight?
One Journalist, who is following this race the first time, was asking because of the weather situation and the cold temperatures in the mountains: "Why are you not organizing the rally in the warmer seasons and only in daylight?" "Well," a member of the organization answered, "because this is the challenge. To drive 24 hours in summer, daylight or round courses is easy. This is a tough race. The participants know this - and want this."
Update from first stage Athens - Distomo
As one of the last competitors, the rally-organizer and head of the "Bulgarian Dakar Team", Todor Hristov (Mitsubishi Pajero T2), actually stuck in the first stage. His long-station Pajero hit a small hill and the car is not able to move. The organization is trying to get him out.
