|Greece 24 Hours TICKER: The weather is making the race extremely tough.|
With a short delay, on Saturday at 12:00 (local time, 11:00 CET) midday the competitors of the "24 hours of Greece" started in the race... The first part of the race should be more difficult than expected. After the first photopoint was wrong (so sorry, we today have no pictures of the race), also the press crews had their own adventure.
In the afternoon in started heavily to rain, the first stage about 280 kms especially in the stony and rough mountains became totally muddy and slippy. At a second photopoint (km 250) the first participants (the two bikes of Boudros Vasilis and Dimitris Athanasoulopoulos, both from Greece) arrived two hours later (!) than expected, followed by the first car of the Bulgarians Desislav Slavchev / Margarita Staynova (Mercedes G 500V8) - what is especially interesting, because the first car started one hour later than the last bike and the only quad of the Slowenian Edward Jerak.
After them a long time nothing happened, the rain became more and more and darkness and deep fog made it nearly impossible to stay at this point for pictures or videos. So all the press crews went to the finish of the first stage in the village of Distomo in the north of Athens, where the participants have a rest of two hours and can repair their equipment.
On a trailer we saw the favourites in the SSV/T3 class, Canko Cankov and Zornitsa Todorova with their Polaris RZR. "The race was nice, but at Kilometer 100 our engine has blown up... so we had to retire" Zornitsa reported.
Actually at 18:00 CET (19:00 local time) only the two bikes of Boudros Vasilis and Dimitris Athanasoulopoulos and the Bulgarian Mercedes of Slavchev / Staynova passed the finish line of SS1... From here the participants have to drive another 642 kms in two stages, the finish will be at Sunday midday in Athens.
