Hungarian Baja 2008 Special-Newssection (FIA Baja Worldcup)

Hungarian Baja: Ales Loprais in the truck-lead after first stage.

All special stages of the opening stage of Hungarian baja 2008 knew only one winner: Ales Loprais. On dusty and winding tracks near Veszprem he took the lead after the first special and maintained the lead further on. Hubgarian Baja has been taking place near Veszprem for several years. The tracks well known from central Europe Rally were interconnected in a different way, so that none of the participating drivers can take advantage from the experience from the ASO event in April. The mix of different tracks makes the route difficult for navigators in terms of concentration. As for brakes, it is the mechanicsā€˜ time. The route is tricky in general due to numerous jumps.

It was clear from the very beginning that Zoltan Szaller on a MAN would be the only really considerable rival. The Hungarian benefits from the knowledge of local tracks and after the first two specials he stayed in close contact with Ales. Ales continuous attack, however, did not allow him to even get in touch with the lead. "Today everything was the way it should. We had done so many technical advancements on the truck and they are all just great! The parameters are exceptional and that makes us feel good about it. The cooling is great as well as engine modifications. The suspension setup is fabulous. The program for Sunday is shorter than today, we all feel well and that makes us optimistic enough," Ales added at the finish of the fourth special.

Unlike at the CER or the Dakar, after the specials all vehicles must report to the parc ferme where they stay until the next stage. There is only a limited service time. The Tatra, fortunately enough, did not require anything but simple maintenance tasks. The bivouac is located on the same spot as at the CER. The small scope of the rally ensures a friendly and home-type atmosphere, in which some fans and friends have found their way to their teams. Hungarian Baja is an event of the World Cup for cross country bajas and the Hungarian and Czech cross-country championships.
