Indian Arc: Great opening of the Indian Rickshaw Challenge 2006.

34 men, 7 women and 2 kids will set out in 16 auto rickshaws on an ‘amazing race for the clinically insane’, after the inaugural opening of the annual event on the 21st August from Besant Nagar Beach, Chennai. Indian Auto Rickshaw Challenge 2006 is organized by Mr. Aravind Kumar, an Indian based in Hungar, who earlier this year participated in the first annual Budapest-Bamako Rally, an 8,000-kilometer race from the heart of Central Europe to the heart of West Africa.

Adventure tourists and enthusiastic participants will put their endurance, navigating skills and auto rickshaws to the test on this one-of-its-kind trophy. The participants will ride more than 1000 kms crossing 12 districts and one Union Territory. The competitors will complete daily stages of 150-200 kilometers, making their way through monsoon rains, crowds, uncertain roads and other typically Indian obstacles. Each stage of the rally will be opened by a prominent personality, including regional celebrities, and several stops will feature unforgettable parties.

The rally will start at Chennai and reach Mahabalipuram at the end of day one. The participants will continue the next day to ride along the east coast road till Pondicherry. The third stop would be Tanjore after which the participants will stop at Madurai for the fourth evening. They will then ride on to the port city, Tuticorin the following day. Their next destination would be at Courtallam where they will get to enjoy the water falls. After a week’s riding the rally would end at Kanyakumari on the 27th August.

Participants will be given challenge tasks in the day’s itinerary. They are expected to complete the tasks specified before the flag down that day. The participants will reach Kanyakumari on the 27th August where the rally will come to an end after a week full of great adventure and evenings filled up with fun and unforgettable parties at several stops.

13 out of 16 participating teams in this year’s event are international. The winning team in the rally will be declared the "Auto rickshaw Rally World Champions". Another winner will be the children of India, as sponsor proceeds from the rally will benefit local charities in providing better education to them.
