 | 20th Italian Baja: Riverbed-crossing complicated as walking on eggshells
|

 | | | He always represents a nightmare for his challengers, as he is the one who always gains victory. In fact since 2010 Alberto Basso is still the unbeaten biker, the "Lord of Italian Baja". Three victories have been also gained by the great Fabio Farioli (1998, 2000, 2001), but nowadays only the biker from Porcia can extend his successful stream.
After choosing TM, Husqvarna and Honda, he is improving a Suzuki 450 of the Motoclub BRP Team and seems to be ready to face the 2013 challenge (15th/17 th March). "I have an old dream" he admits: "To win five Italian Baja editions with five different bikes and then quit my career."
Born in 1967, he doesn’t seem to care about years going by. "I’m always training and experience counts a lot, you cannot buy it in a supermarket." Basso is extraordinary able to ride on riverbeds: "Riding on stones can be compared to walk on eggshells, you need to have a specific sensitivity, in order to properly ride the bike and guess which one could be the right direction."
Along the riverbeds of the Meduna and Cosa torrent and the Tagliamento river, he seems to feel at home, like Tarzan in the jungle. "I perfectly know this kind of track. I just take advantage of it" he explains. "My stranger challengers, but also Italian bikers, try to go fast along the country paths, which are similar to the grounds of a bike rally track. On the other hand, when they have to quit them and reach the riverbeds, they are certain to add minutes to their gap."
The only pity is that only few bikers came to take part in the Pordenone race during last years, both bike and quad riders. "The Italian Baja represents a very hard race, that vehicles and competitors have to face with. You cannot ride if you don’t dare and at the same time you don’t accept to lose."
A true passion characterizes Alberto Basso, influenced by the goal of Sunday 17th March, when he will be supposed to face the two laps marathon of the "Rauscedo" Selective Section (140 km), which will without any doubt remark gaps among bikers.
