Italian Baja: Dark and Dirty prologue at the Italian baja

| |
| After a long technical scrutineering on Friday evening the prologue started with a loop of about 7 km. The sun was just about to set when Marc Blazquez in his Nissan left the start. The last cars had to start in total darkness. The track consisted of sandy tracks near the village Aviano directly at the base of the Alps. With temperatures of 23 degrees and absolutely no wind the competitors had to overcome more and more difficult visibility conditions as in addition to the darkness with each passing car the air got dustier.
The previous year's winner Marc Blazquez from Spain in his Tot Courses Nissan Navara defended his title in the prologue and finished with the best time followed by Jozef Sykora from the Czech Republic (Ralliart Mitsubishi Pajero) and Boris Gadasin from Russia (Nissan Navara). Place 4 was achieved by Lorenzo Codeca/Fabio Ferro from Italy (Suzuki Grand Vitara) followed by Sandor Kis from Hungary (Nissan Navara) and Alexandre Re from Potugal (Tot Courses Nissan Pathfinder). Kenjiro Shinozuka from Japan only managed to arrive on position 39.
Bad luck for two teams already on the first day: A team from Israel (Mitsubishe L200) and from the Czech Republic (Mitsubishi Pajero) had to quit the race with broken cars. From the original three Bowlers from the United Kingdom only one managed to arrive on the starting line.
On Saturday the real race starts in this year's Italian Baja. Two different tracks in the area of Aviano and Vivaro have to be driven multiple times. While the Aviano section mostly consists of sandy dirty tracks the Vivaro section bears the feared hard and stony part that the Italian Baja is famous for.
