The fourth international rally raid "Latvian Baja 2013", organized by “RE Autoclub”, is already at our doorstep. This year it will start in Jekabpils, Vecpilsetas Square, on the 13th September at 18 o’clock. Several dozen drivers and navigators from Finland, Russia, Belorus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Latvia, and Lithuania will put their skills to the test during the gruelling race.
This year teams must travel approximately 600 km along roads and forests of the neighbourhood of Viesite, Jekabpils and Madona within three days. After opening the rally raid on September 13, teams will cover the first and shortest stage that will be only 8.5 km long. The following two days they will cover approximately 279 km each day. The rally raid will finish in Madona, Saieta Square, at 21 o’clock in the evening of September 15.
The Latvian Baja, which, until now had the name of “Riga Baja”, is organized as the sixth and final stage of the Russian Championship this year. The best racers of the neighbouring country will be tested directly in the forests and on the roads of Latvia. Some of the competitors are this year’s leader of the Russian Championship Vladimir Vasilyev (“G-Force Motosport”), sportsmen of RE Autoclub from Finland Tapio Suominen and Jouni Ampuja as well as many others.
“Everything has been determined in Latvia for the few past years. As this year’s fifth championship’s stage has been cancelled, the best teams will come to Latvia – at the moment four crews are claiming the first place in class T2 only,” stated Roberts Elbakyans, the establisher of RE Autoclub.
He told that several of the world’s motoring stars will participate, about 30 teams will start in total. Racers from Tolyatti (Russia) will make the longest way to the competition. In another turn, one of the intrigues of the competition will be the duel between electric cars from Latvia and Belorus.
“Spectators in Latvia could see the same as watching the screens of television from Dakar,” as R. Elbakyans said explaining that the rally raid can be called as one of Latvia’s success stories. Namely, the “Latvian Baja” rally raid is always mentioned as the example in Russia, in their turn, foreign drivers go to Latvia in order to participate in qualitative competitions and get valuable experience. During the Russian Championship only one competition stage can be organized beyond the borders of the neighbouring country. This year three countries including Ukraine and Belorus offered to organize the last stage. Organizers decided in favour of Latvia, as the establisher of RE Autoclub indicated.
Last year 25 crews participated in the rally. Among them the representatives of RE Autoclub – Janis Naglis’ and Reinis Trups’ crew - won the first place, and Tapio Suominens’ and Marku Hurskainens’ team took the honourable second place. More about the event you can find at [ LATVIANBAJA.COM ].
